We study deformation theory of mod p Galois representations of p-adic fields with values in generalised tori, such as L-groups of (possibly non-split) tori. We show that the corresponding deformation rings are formally smooth over a group algebra of a finite abelian p-group. We compute their dimension and the set of irreducible components.

Dale Peterson has discovered a surprising result that the quantum cohomology ring of the flag variety $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n({\mathbb {C}})/B$ is isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the intersection of the Peterson variety $\operatorname {\mathrm {Pet}}_n$ and the opposite Schubert cell associated with the identity element $\Omega _e^\circ $ in $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n({\mathbb {C}})/B$. This is an unpublished result, so papers of Kostant and Rietsch are referred for this result. An explicit presentation of the quantum cohomology ring of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n({\mathbb {C}})/B$ is given by Ciocan–Fontanine and Givental–Kim. In this paper, we introduce further quantizations of their presentation so that they reflect the coordinate rings of the intersections of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hess}}(N,h)$ and $\Omega _e^\circ $ in $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n({\mathbb {C}})/B$. In other words, we generalize the Peterson’s statement to regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties via the presentation given by Ciocan–Fontanine and Givental–Kim. As an application of our theorem, we show that the singular locus of the intersection of some regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hess}}(N,h_m)$ and $\Omega _e^\circ $ is the intersection of certain Schubert variety and $\Omega _e^\circ $, where $h_m=(m,n,\ldots ,n)$ for $1<m<n$. We also see that $\operatorname {\mathrm {Hess}}(N,h_2) \cap \Omega _e^\circ $ is related with the cyclic quotient singularity.

Let G be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field k, and let $\operatorname {Fl}$ be the affine flag variety of G. For every regular semisimple element $\gamma $ of $G(k((t)))$, the affine Springer fiber $\operatorname {Fl}_\gamma $ can be presented as a union of closed subvarieties $\operatorname {Fl}^{\leq w}_{\gamma }$, defined as the intersection of $\operatorname {Fl}_{\gamma }$ with an affine Schubert variety $\operatorname {Fl}^{\leq w}$.

The main result of this paper asserts that if elements $w_1,\ldots ,w_n$ are sufficiently regular, then the natural map $H_i(\bigcup _{j=1}^n \operatorname {Fl}^{\leq w_j}_{\gamma })\to H_i(\operatorname {Fl}_{\gamma })$ is injective for every $i\in \mathbb Z$. It plays an important role in our work [BV], where our result is used to construct good filtrations of $H_i(\operatorname {Fl}_{\gamma })$. Along the way, we also show that every affine Schubert variety can be written as an intersection of closures of semi-infinite orbits.

We prove a strong quantitative version of the Kurosh Problem, which has been conjectured by Zelmanov, up to a mild polynomial error factor, thereby extending all previously known growth rates of algebraic algebras. Consequently, we provide the first counterexamples to the Kurosh Problem over any field with known subexponential growth, and the first examples of finitely generated, infinite-dimensional, nil Lie algebras with known subexponential growth over fields of characteristic zero.

We also widen the known spectrum of the Gel’fand–Kirillov dimensions of algebraic algebras, improving the answer of Alahmadi–Alsulami–Jain–Zelmanov to a question of Bell, Smoktunowicz, Small and Young. Finally, we prove improved analogous results for graded-nil algebras.

We present a solution to the conjugacy problem in the group of outer automorphisms of $F_3$, a free group of rank 3. We distinguish according to several computable invariants, such as irreducibility, subgroups of polynomial growth and subgroups carrying the attracting lamination. We establish, by considerations on train tracks, that the conjugacy problem is decidable for the outer automorphisms of $F_3$ that preserve a given rank 2 free factor. Then we establish, by consideration on mapping tori, that it is decidable for outer automorphisms of $F_3$ whose maximal polynomial growth subgroups are cyclic. This covers all the cases left by the state of the art.

We give a conditional bound for the average analytic rank of elliptic curves over an arbitrary number field. In particular, under the assumptions that all elliptic curves over a number field K are modular and have L-functions which satisfy the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, we show that the average analytic rank of isomorphism classes of elliptic curves over K is bounded above by $(9\deg (K)+1)/2$, when ordered by naive height. A key ingredient in the proof is giving asymptotics for the number of elliptic curves over an arbitrary number field with a prescribed local condition; these results are obtained by proving general results for counting points of bounded height on weighted projective stacks with a prescribed local condition, which may be of independent interest.

We study the relation between the coregularity, the index of log Calabi–Yau pairs and the complements of Fano varieties. We show that the index of a log Calabi–Yau pair $(X,B)$ of coregularity $1$ is at most $120\lambda ^2$, where $\lambda $ is the Weil index of $K_X+B$. This extends a recent result due to Filipazzi, Mauri and Moraga. We prove that a Fano variety of absolute coregularity $0$ admits either a $1$-complement or a $2$-complement. In the case of Fano varieties of absolute coregularity $1$, we show that they admit an N-complement with N at most 6. Applying the previous results, we prove that a klt singularity of absolute coregularity $0$ admits either a $1$-complement or $2$-complement. Furthermore, a klt singularity of absolute coregularity $1$ admits an N-complement with N at most 6. This extends the classic classification of $A,D,E$-type klt surface singularities to arbitrary dimensions. Similar results are proved in the case of coregularity $2$. In the course of the proof, we prove a novel canonical bundle formula for pairs with bounded relative coregularity. In the case of coregularity at least $3$, we establish analogous statements under the assumption of the index conjecture and the boundedness of B-representations.

The triangle removal states that if G contains $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint triangles, then G contains $\delta (\varepsilon )n^3$ triangles. Unfortunately, there are no sensible bounds on the order of growth of $\delta (\varepsilon )$, and at any rate, it is known that $\delta (\varepsilon )$ is not polynomial in $\varepsilon $. Csaba recently obtained an asymmetric variant of the triangle removal, stating that if G contains $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint triangles, then G contains $2^{-\operatorname {\mathrm {poly}}(1/\varepsilon )}\cdot n^5$ copies of $C_5$. To this end, he devised a new variant of Szemerédi’s regularity lemma. We obtain the following results:

• • We first give a regularity-free proof of Csaba’s theorem, which improves the number of copies of $C_5$ to the optimal number $\operatorname {\mathrm {poly}}(\varepsilon )\cdot n^5$.

• • We say that H is $K_3$-abundant if every graph containing $\varepsilon n^2$ edge-disjoint triangles has $\operatorname {\mathrm {poly}}(\varepsilon )\cdot n^{\lvert V(H)\rvert }$ copies of H. It is easy to see that a $K_3$-abundant graph must be triangle-free and tripartite. Given our first result, it is natural to ask if all triangle-free tripartite graphs are $K_3$-abundant. Our second result is that assuming a well-known conjecture of Ruzsa in additive number theory, the answer to this question is negative.

Our proofs use a mix of combinatorial, number-theoretic, probabilistic and Ramsey-type arguments.

Let G be a linear real reductive Lie group. Orbital integrals define traces on the group algebra of G. We introduce a construction of higher orbital integrals in the direction of higher cyclic cocycles on the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra of G. We analyze these higher orbital integrals via Fourier transform by expressing them as integrals on the tempered dual of G. We obtain explicit formulas for the pairing between the higher orbital integrals and the K-theory of the reduced group $C^{*}$-algebra, and we discuss their application to K-theory.

We study Schubert polynomials using geometry of infinite-dimensional flag varieties and degeneracy loci. Applications include Graham-positivity of coefficients appearing in equivariant coproduct formulas and expansions of back-stable and enriched Schubert polynomials. We also construct an embedding of the type C flag variety and study the corresponding pullback map on (equivariant) cohomology rings.

We study homotopy groups of spaces of long links in Euclidean space of codimension at least three. With multiple components, they admit split injections from homotopy groups of spheres. We show that, up to knotting, these account for all the homotopy groups in a range which depends on the dimensions of the source manifolds and target manifold and which roughly generalizes the triple-point-free range for isotopy classes. Just beyond this range, joining components sends both a parametrized long Borromean rings class and a Hopf fibration to a generator of the first nontrivial homotopy group of the space of long knots. For spaces of equidimensional long links of most source dimensions, we describe generators for the homotopy group in this degree in terms of these Borromean rings and homotopy groups of spheres. A key ingredient in most of our results is a graphing map which increases source and target dimensions by one.

We establish sufficient and necessary conditions for the joint transitivity of linear iterates in a minimal topological dynamical system with commuting transformations. This result provides the first topological analogue of the classical Berend and Bergelson joint ergodicity criterion in measure-preserving systems.

Let $\mathcal {A}$ be an abelian length category containing a d-cluster tilting subcategory $\mathcal {M}$. We prove that a subcategory of $\mathcal {M}$ is a d-torsion class if and only if it is closed under d-extensions and d-quotients. This generalises an important result for classical torsion classes. As an application, we prove that the d-torsion classes in $\mathcal {M}$ form a complete lattice. Moreover, we use the characterisation to classify the d-torsion classes associated to higher Auslander algebras of type $\mathbb {A}$, and give an algorithm to compute them explicitly. The classification is furthermore extended to the setup of higher Nakayama algebras.

We prove a full measurable version of Vizing’s theorem for bounded degree Borel graphs, that is, we show that every Borel graph $\mathcal {G}$ of degree uniformly bounded by $\Delta \in \mathbb {N}$ defined on a standard probability space $(X,\mu )$ admits a $\mu $-measurable proper edge coloring with $(\Delta +1)$-many colors. This answers a question of Marks [Question 4.9, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 29 (2016)] also stated in Kechris and Marks as a part of [Problem 6.13, survey (2020)], and extends the result of the author and Pikhurko [Adv. Math. 374, (2020)], who derived the same conclusion under the additional assumption that the measure $\mu $ is $\mathcal {G}$-invariant.

We prove that for a GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroup, the complete modified logarithmic Sobolev constant is bounded by the inverse of its complete positivity mixing time. For classical Markov semigroups, this gives a short proof that every sub-Laplacian of a Hörmander system on a compact manifold satisfies a modified log-Sobolev inequality uniformly for scalar and matrix-valued functions. For quantum Markov semigroups, we show that the complete modified logarithmic Sobolev constant is comparable to the spectral gap up to the logarithm of the dimension. Such estimates are asymptotically tight for a quantum birth-death process. Our results, along with the consequence of concentration inequalities, are applicable to GNS-symmetric semigroups on general von Neumann algebras.

A spectral convex set is a collection of symmetric matrices whose range of eigenvalues forms a symmetric convex set. Spectral convex sets generalize the Schur-Horn orbitopes studied by Sanyal–Sottile–Sturmfels (2011). We study this class of convex bodies, which is closed under intersections, polarity and Minkowski sums. We describe orbits of faces and give a formula for their Steiner polynomials. We then focus on spectral polyhedra. We prove that spectral polyhedra are spectrahedra and give small representations as spectrahedral shadows. We close with observations and questions regarding hyperbolicity cones, polar convex bodies and spectral zonotopes.

Stochastic embeddings of finite metric spaces into graph-theoretic trees have proven to be a vital tool for constructing approximation algorithms in theoretical computer science. In the present work, we build out some of the basic theory of stochastic embeddings in the infinite setting with an aim toward applications to Lipschitz free space theory. We prove that proper metric spaces stochastically embedding into $\mathbb {R}$-trees have Lipschitz free spaces isomorphic to $L^1$-spaces. We then undergo a systematic study of stochastic embeddability of Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces into $\mathbb {R}$-trees by way of stochastic embeddability of their boundaries into ultrametric spaces. The following are obtained as our main results: (1) every snowflake of a compact, finite Nagata-dimensional metric space stochastically embeds into an ultrametric space and has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $\ell ^1$, (2) the Lipschitz free space over hyperbolic n-space is isomorphic to the Lipschitz free space over Euclidean n-space and (3) every infinite, finitely generated hyperbolic group stochastically embeds into an $\mathbb {R}$-tree, has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $\ell ^1$, and admits a proper, uniformly Lipschitz affine action on $\ell ^1$.

Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the cohomology of the complete flag variety and have a combinatorial formulation in terms of bumpless pipe dreams. Quantum double Schubert polynomials are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of the complete flag variety, but no analogous combinatorial formulation had been discovered. We introduce a generalization of the bumpless pipe dreams called quantum bumpless pipe dreams, giving a novel combinatorial formula for quantum double Schubert polynomials as a sum of binomial weights of quantum bumpless pipe dreams. We give a bijective proof for this formula by showing that the sum of binomial weights satisfies a defining transition equation.

In this work, we develop an integral representation for the partial L-function of a pair $\pi \times \tau $ of genuine irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations, $\pi $ of the m-fold covering of Matsumoto of the symplectic group $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$ and $\tau $ of a certain covering group of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_k$, with arbitrary m, n and k. Our construction is based on the recent extension by Cai, Friedberg, Ginzburg and the author, of the classical doubling method of Piatetski-Shapiro and Rallis, from rank-$1$ twists to arbitrary rank twists. We prove a basic global identity for the integral and compute the local integrals with unramified data. Our global results are subject to certain conjectures, but when $k=1$ they are unconditional for all m. One possible future application of this work will be a Shimura-type lift of representations from covering groups to general linear groups. In a recent work, we used the present results in order to provide an analytic definition of local factors for representations of the m-fold covering of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Sp}}_{2n}$.

We geometrize the mod p Satake isomorphism of Herzig and Henniart–Vignéras using Witt vector affine flag varieties for reductive groups in mixed characteristic. We deduce this as a special case of a formula, stated in terms of the geometry of generalized Mirković–Vilonen cycles, for the Satake transform of an arbitrary parahoric mod p Hecke algebra with respect to an arbitrary Levi subgroup. Moreover, we prove an explicit formula for the convolution product in an arbitrary parahoric mod p Hecke algebra. Our methods involve the constant term functors inspired from the geometric Langlands program, and we also treat the case of reductive groups in equal characteristic. We expect this to be a first step toward a geometrization of a mod p Local Langlands Correspondence.
