Entry into World War II

Chapter 4 examines how PR firms supported citizens’ organizations in the great debate over America’s role in the world between 1939 and 1941. Most notably, the John Price Jones Corporation provided organizational and fund-raising support for the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies. It helped that the Corporation and the Committee shared a similar worldview. Other organizations, such as the American Committee for Non-participation in Japanese Aggression and Fight For Freedom, also recognized the need for PR support. On the other side of the debate, the America First Committee wanted PR support and found a sympathetic PR voice in James Selvage, but Selvage refused to take the job as he recognized it would likely have negative consequences for his firm.
