A recent issue of Criminology (1988), the official publication of the American Society of Criminology, was devoted largely to what some call the age-crime debate. This debate has pitted the giants of American criminology, with the ubiquitous assistance of David Farrington, against the authors of this paper. It has gone on long enough that each side now accuses the other of repetition and lack of understanding. It has gone on long enough that even those not directly involved are beginning to show signs of weariness. It has perhaps gone on long enough that it is time to reconsider what the debate was all about in the first place.
