In the past year, Corrections in Canada has been marked several important appointments to senior positions in departments of the Federal and Provincial Governments. At the same time, some jurisdictions decided to substantially increase staff in the correctional agencies.

Early in 1960, the federal government decided to shift the responsibility for correctional agencies from the Ministry of Justice to the Department of the Solicitor General. Legislation was introduced to place the R.C.M.P., the Penitentiary Service and the National Parole Board under the direction of the Solicitor General. The changeover has practically been completed.
