The incoming editors of History in Africa are seeking submissions for their inaugural volume.

Expanding on the previous theme of the methods of mobility and movement, the African Studies Association journal History in Africa invites scholars to explore the methods of diaspora, particularly in the Transatlantic and Trans-Indian Ocean realms.

History in Africa was established as a “journal of method” in 1974 and has served for over 50 years as a site of innovative inquiry into the foundations of the historical discipline while addressing the particular intercultural and methodological challenges of African history. The journal’s milestone Volume 50 issue merged important generations of scholarship, featuring, for example, John Thornton’s critical assessment of new archival material about the Kongo Kingdom in the 16th century together with Ibrahim Bàbátúndé Anọ́ba’s internet-age update of Derek Peterson’s concept of “Homespun Historians” as oral traditions move into social media.

With new methodological directions emerging in histories of Africa, the Americas, and the Atlantic and Indian ocean realms, we seek to invite work that further integrates these fields into the purview of this esteemed journal. Whether using archeology as a means of identifying under-documented Atlantic crossings, reconstructing African culture traditions by way of scattered traces in diasporic communities, or identifying new themes emerging in documents beyond the European archive, we seek submissions that articulate methods and research agendas that map global connections and collapse unidirectional theories of historical influence.

We are particularly interested in submissions that:

• Articulate innovations and challenges of archives and methods within African diasporic histories
• Develop approaches that trace the methods of African history into those of World history
• Highlight the unique breadth of diasporic methods for a global vision of African history
• Transform our scholarly debates rather than rehash them

As always, submissions that fall outside the scope of this call are welcome by the deadline and throughout the year.

We welcome single authored and collaborative scholarship from senior scholars and emerging scholars alike, with special welcome to scholarship from the continent.
