Special Joint Collection: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Infection Prevention, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Healthcare Epidemiology
Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology (ICHE) and Antimicrobial Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology (ASHE) invite submissions for a joint special collection exploring the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in our field.
As AI continues to advance, its integration into infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare epidemiology offers promising new tools—but also introduces critical questions about implementation, ethics, equity, and real-world impact. This special collection will examine both the opportunities and the challenges of AI in healthcare settings through a multidisciplinary lens.
Topics of Interest
We welcome original research, reviews, research briefs, concise communications, commentaries, and letters to the editor. Examples of topics may include but are not limited to:
- AI-based surveillance approaches for antimicrobial use, resistance, and/or healthcare-associated infections (HAIs)
- Machine learning for antimicrobial prescribing optimization
- Predictive modeling for outbreak detection and response
- Natural language processing (NLP) to identify infection-related events
- AI-driven clinical decision support tools for antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship programs
- Equity and bias in AI algorithms
- Implementation, design, and real-world integration of AI tools
- Regulatory, legal, and ethical considerations of AI in clinical settings
Submission Guidelines
- Manuscripts must be submitted to either ICHE or ASHE depending on topic relevance.
- Authors should select “AI Special Collection” during submission when asked if the submission is part of a special collection
- All submissions will undergo standard peer review and must adhere to the journal’s submission guidelines.
