Notes on Transcription and Terminology

Romanization of the names of Taiwanese people in this book is done according to the Wade-Giles system, in respect of the choice made by Arthur Wolf, the original researcher whose fieldnotes this book is based on. I used pseudonyms for all research participants. Romanization of other Chinese characters, including place names, is done according to the Hanyu Pinyin system. A few exceptions, that is, local idioms, are marked by an H (Hoklo Taiwanese) in Glossary.

In terms of writing system, I used traditional Chinese characters according to the convention in the historical context of postwar Taiwan.

Throughout the book, I use the term “Chinese” in the broad sense of cultural heritage.
