The original of this bust was apparently the picture in the Master's Lodge; it represents Bentley in scarf, gown and bands and a formidable wig, and was the gift of Bentley's daughters Elizabeth Ridge and Joanna Cumberland, familiarly known as “Jug,” the Phoebe of her admirer Byrom and mother of Richard Cumberland the dramatist, whose childish reminiscences of his grandfather are among the pleasantest pages of his chaotic Memoirs. If one point rather than another is to be singled out for admiration, it is the rendering of the many textures necessitated by the costume, a quality which is even more conspicuous in the model and the cast, Pls. XI and XII.
