In top right corner of Speed’s map of Bedfordshire (no 5), sharing border of that map on two sides, with border of strapwork on two inner sides and single line inner borders. Title on cartouche top right, town arms above, scale bottom right with compass above, panel on left containing key with letters A-Y(except F, I, J, O, U) and figures 2-18 identifying places marked on map.
Streets are shown in plan, with churches, houses, trees and walls in elevation. Area covered is from St Peter’s church, north, to King’s Ditch, south; and The Friers and Caudwell Abbye, west, to below Duck Mill and Talps Bridge, east.
The plan is unaltered, apart from some re-touching, in later editions of the complete map. Locations as for county map.
P2. PHILIP LEA 1689
Size: 7.2 x 6.8 cms. Scale: 1:15000
Bedforde || Noted places in Bedford towne. In bottom left corner of Lea’s re-working of Saxton’s map of Northamptonshire, etc. (no 1, edition (v)), sharing border of that map on two sides, with double line border on inner sides. Title top left, key on panel above map with heading Noted places in Bedford towne above that. There is no compass or scale.
The plan is a very close copy of Speed’s, trimmed at left and right. Letters and numbers in the key follow Speed closely, though omitting those for places which were removed by trimming, with the following exceptions: M Duke Lane (Speed, M Duck Lane), N Mill Lane (N Lurke Lane, P Mill Lane) and also omitting Speed’s R Pieck Place, 9 Old Ruines [part of Castle wall] and 10 The Bridge. The plan is unaltered in later editions of the complete map.
