from Section II - The Journey Toward Positive Body Image
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 02 February 2021
We are surrounded by images and messages telling us what we “should” look like: what shape our bodies should be in, how much muscle we should have (and where on our bodies this muscle should be), how much fat we should have (and the only acceptable places for it), what texture of hair we should have and how it should be styled, what skin tone we should have, how our eyelids and noses should be shaped, what clothes and accessories we should wear, how we should smell, how tall we should be, and so on [1]. These images and messages appear on social media, billboards, magazines, television, movies, and radio. We can find them in fitness centers, grocery stores, subways, and most places we go on a daily basis.
