David Heard CBE studied physics and geology before joining the London based Abu Dhabi Petroleum Company in Abu Dhabi in August 1963. Working for more than a decade as a Petroleum Engineer he participated in the discovery of oil in the Abu Dhabi desert. Thereafter he was for more than two decades the Representative of the same company in Abu Dhabi. He married in 1967 the historian Dr. Frauke Heard- Bey who then joined him in Abu Dhabi, where they both still live in retirement. They have a son and two daughters. David and Frauke were fortunate to meet both Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan on many occasions. David is a member of Chatham House, The Royal Society for Asian Affairs, the Travellers Club, and is a Fellow of the Energy Institute, all based in London. He published ‘From Pearls to Oil, How the Oil Industry came to the United Arab Emirates’ in 2011.
