Readmissions are a focus of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Under the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), hospitals can lose reimbursement if they have high readmission rates. Using readmission rates as a metric has been questioned by some and programs have been implemented to decrease readmission rates. Many factors affect readmission rates including the disease, laboratory abnormalities, complications, comorbidities, demographics, individual factors, socioeconomic factors, and access to care.
