Summary
CAPITATION TAX.
In 1825 (7 December) the following Grace, proposed by the Library Syndicate, was allowed by the Caput, and passed the Senate:
To increase the Funds of the Library by a quarterly contribution of one shilling and sixpence from each Member of the University, excepting Sizars.
In 1860 (27 April) the Council of the Senate proposed the following scheme of taxation for general purposes:
That all persons who have taken the Degree of Doctor in Divinity, Law, or Medicine, Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Arts or of Law, be required to pay to the University in every year the sum of twelve shillings, including the sum of six shillings, payable, as heretofore, for the support of the University Library : such annual sum of twelve shillings to be paid to the Vice-Chancellor by four equal quarterly payments on the usual quarter-days, the first of which shall become due at Midsummer, 1860.
This report was confirmed by Grace, 10 May, 1860, but not without opposition.
