Summary

Lacan reveals what is possible when one brings the insights of psychoanalysis into philosophy and the insights of philosophy into psychoanalysis. He is both a philosophical psychoanalyst and a psychoanalytic philosopher. Although he wouldn’t call himself a philosopher, he is one nevertheless. In his theoretical work, a new conception of subjectivity emerges that pushes previous ideas of the subject in an unforeseen direction. With Lacan, the subject acquires an unconscious that displaces the subject’s essence outside of itself. One finds oneself as a subject when the unconscious derails one’s most intimate intentions. The discovery of the unconscious doesn’t eliminate the subject but allows us to understand it anew.
