Chapter 5 traces the history of a number of existing UN mechanisms which represent the interests of particular vulnerable groups in the international system (persons with disabilities, women, and children). The aim of this analysis is to see what types of normative discourses have found traction and led to the development of institutions to represent these vulnerable groups, in order to ascertain the type of normative arguments that would gain support in arguing for international institutions to represent future generations. An important lesson from the case studies is that a normative discourse in which development concerns feature prominently, has been a common thread running through the history of these UN mechanisms. The chapter analyses the differences and similarities between arguments which justify the institutions which have been put in place to represent these vulnerable groups, with arguments used to justify institutions to represent future generations.
This chapter discusses the extent to which these merchants defined themselves via their membership in their lineage, but then turns to the extensive evidence they provided about their marriages and their children, in effect their role as patriarchs of the nuclear households they founded. The men appear to have taken their familial responsibilities seriously and, even as they demonstrated their power over wives and children, they did not present themselves as harsh or unfeeling husbands and fathers.

In this paper we introduce a framework for developing children’s legal capability. This is the outcome of an extended period of interdisciplinary research, reflection, and discussion to explore the question of ‘what does a legally capable child look like?’. Initially this question was explored within the context of adult-focused legal capability literature, and we explain how the framework we propose in this paper has been informed by this scholarship. However, we go on to demonstrate how our work breaks new ground not only because of its focus on children, but because we radically reconceptualise legal capability, drawing on a range of interdisciplinary theories. Within the framework we introduce the concept of ‘baseline’ legal capability, and we argue that this addresses the conundrum we identify in the literature, where legal capability is conceptualised as something which those most in need of effective public legal education can never achieve. More generally, we demonstrate how the framework turns traditional ideas about legal education upside down as we ‘decentre’ the law and legal institutions, and instead place the learner at its core.
An integrative approach addressing diet as well as other lifestyle factors is warranted in studying obesity and its related diseases. The objective of this study is to examine the associations of lifestyle patterns with overweight/obesity among children in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey of children aged 4 to 9 years living in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi (n=426). Dietary intake was collected using a 24-hour dietary recall (24-HR) and evaluated with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI). The Youth Physical Activity Questionnaire (Y-PAQ) assessed physical activity, while other lifestyle factors included presence of a live-in household helper, number of electronic devices in the child’s bedroom, eating while watching TV, family dinner frequency, fast food and breakfast consumption, and hours of sleep. Factor analysis was used to identify the lifestyle patterns. Two lifestyle patterns emerged: an unhealthy pattern marked by higher fast-food intake, eating while watching TV, having a live-in household helper, and lower family dinners; and a healthy pattern with higher physical activity, better HEI, more sleep, micronutrient supplements, and breakfast consumption. The healthy lifestyle pattern was linked to a 30% reduction in overweight/obesity odds (OR= 0.7, 95% CI: 0.53–0.93). A healthy lifestyle pattern, characterized by higher physical activity, better dietary quality, adequate sleep, and breakfast consumption, is associated with lower odds of overweight/obesity among children in the UAE. These findings highlight the importance of promoting comprehensive lifestyle interventions to effectively address childhood obesity in this population.
In the ‘betweens’ of art, research and teaching, this chapter adopts an a/r/tographic approach to explore children’s learning through media art within the Anthropocene, a proposed epoch that acknowledges human impact on Earth’s geology and ecosystems. This learning is thought of as ‘connected learning’, a type of learning that emphasises the integration of educational experiences across various settings, leveraging new media to foster innovative approaches to knowledge creation. The idea of connected learning aligns with the linked concept of children’s lifeworlds – which Arnott and Yelland take to encompass the everyday interactions that children negotiate in daily life as well as the less visible social, technical and material forces that shape those experiences – and the significance of Land as a participant in children’s learning. Children co-labour (or collaborate) with words, materials, technologies and Land to make meaning with their lifeworlds (e.g. semiosis as a process of wording and worlding). They do this in situated practice and through speculation (e.g. by asking “What if...?) to examine possible futures and alternative realities.
The objective of this chapter is to define socio-dramatic play from a cultural-historical perspective and to describe how teachers can become co-players with children in their play. To do this we present case studies from research and a pedagogical toolbox to support children’s participation, learning and development. The chapter begins by outlining children’s socio-dramatic play using a cultural-historical perspective to focus on interactions in shared play. In socio-dramatic play, imagination and creativity are central as children create narratives together. Play creates conditions for children to express and construct meaning with others and to become co-players in a shared imagined world. Adults in early childhood settings traditionally support children’s play by planning, resourcing and observing, although their role as co-player is less understood.
Vitamin D deficiency is common in the UK, especially in certain ethnic minority populations. There is limited information on childhood vitamin D status in the UK, or the factors associated with vitamin D deficiency. Using a cross-sectional study of 4650 children of South Asian, Black African and Caribbean and White European origins (9-10 years old) surveyed between 2004 and 2007, we investigated measurements of circulating 25(OH)D concentrations (a measure of vitamin D status) and anthropometric measurements. Overall, 68% of children had 25(OH)D concentrations ≤50nmol/L and were either insufficient (25-50nmol/L) (45%) or deficient (<25nmol/L) (23%). Mean 25(OH)D concentrations were lowest in South Asian (especially Bangladeshi) children, intermediate in Black African and Caribbean and highest in White European children. Mean values were ≤50nmol/L for all children during the winter months and ≤50nmol/L throughout the year for South Asian, Black African and Caribbean children. In analyses adjusted for season, age, sex, ethnicity, socio-economic status and fat mass index, girls had a higher risk of being vitamin D deficient or insufficient (OR 1.49, 95%CI 1.32, 1.68) compared to boys. South Asian children (OR 25.49, 95%CI 19.95, 32.57) and Black African and Caribbean children (OR 10.31, 95%CI 10.31, 17.52) had the highest risks of being deficient or insufficient compared to White European children. Childhood vitamin D deficiency was common in this study population. In the UK, targeted and novel interventions are needed to increase 25(OH)D concentrations, particularly South Asian and Black African and Caribbean children and reduce the health risks associated with low vitamin D status.
Empirical literature on the trajectory of task performance in children is currently scarce. Therefore, this study investigates both the developmental trajectory of flanker task performance in children and the association with the development of teacher-reported problem behavior. Five waves of flanker performance and behavioral and emotional problems were drawn from a large longitudinal sample of elementary school children in the Netherlands (1424 children, ages 7 to 12 years). Latent growth curve modeling (LGM) identified a piecewise decrease in flanker response time: the steepest decline was found from 7 to 9 years old. Boys had lower levels of response time at age 7 than girls. Children showed a linear decrease in behavioral and emotional problems over time. Parallel LGMs revealed that lower levels of initial flanker response time were associated with a stronger decrease in anxiety problems and oppositional defiant-related behavior. A faster decline in response time was associated with a faster decline in depression problems, attention deficit hyperactivity-, and oppositional defiant-related behavior. Results offer insight into the normative development of performance monitoring in childhood and the link between behavioral measures of performance monitoring and behavioral and emotional problems. Future research should focus on the directionality of the association between performance monitoring and psychopathology.
To describe Brazilian parents’ perceptions of non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) in beverages consumed by children and their preferences for NSS front-of-package labels (FOPLs).
Design:
A qualitative-driven mixed-methods embedded design was used. Seven focus groups with parents of children explored perceptions of NSS. Thematic analysis was conducted on transcripts. Participants also completed a closed-ended survey assessing familiarity with NSS-containing beverages, ability to identify NSS on labels, and perceptions of NSS FOPLs. Survey responses were summarized using descriptive statistics.
Setting:
Public and private schools and early childhood education centers in urban areas of two municipalities in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
Participants:
Forty parents of children aged 2-5 and 6-11, across seven focus groups.
Results:
About 35% of participants reported their children consumed at least one NSS-containing beverage weekly in the past month; 17% reported daily consumption. Parents expressed a preference for natural products and confusion over the term “edulcorantes” (Portuguese for NSS). They shared concerns about health effects of both sugar and NSS, particularly for children. NSS were seen as acceptable in specific cases, such as diabetes. Most parents supported FOPL like Mexico’s, stating “not recommended for children.” In the survey, 85% correctly identified beverages with NSS, but 82% misclassified non-NSS ingredients (e.g., sugar syrup, caramel) as NSS. The Mexico-style FOPL was preferred by 95%, who found it helpful and easy to understand.
Conclusions:
An FOPL clearly indicating NSS presence, especially one recommending against consumption by children, may help parents make informed choices and reduce children’s intake of NSS-containing beverages.
Household food insecurity (HFI) is a social determinant of health globally. Rates of HFI have risen in many high-income countries in recent years, particularly in households with children. The health outcomes associated with HFI for children and adolescents have not been systematically synthesised. This review was conducted to support advocacy efforts for meaningful policy action to reduce HFI in households with children.
Design:
A systematic search was conducted in Medline, Embase and PsycInfo databases. Primary studies measuring the association between physical or mental health outcomes and HFI were included. Studies were appraised and population, setting, measures and outcomes were extracted. Findings were grouped by related outcomes. Due to heterogeneity, findings were synthesised narratively. Rapid review methodology was used to accommodate resource constraints.

Youth aged less than 18 years.
Results:
Thirty-six studies were included. Most were cross-sectional studies conducted in the USA. Outcomes included general health, early childhood, cardiometabolic, asthma, dental caries, mental health, sleep, diet and anaemia. Despite substantial heterogeneity in HFI measures and analysis, findings support associations between HFI and negative outcomes for general health status, asthma, dental caries and mental health. Findings for other outcomes were mixed.
Conclusions:
This review clarifies the effects of HFI on children and adolescents. Findings highlight trends for negative physical and mental health outcomes associated with HFI during youth, particularly related to mental health, oral health, asthma and general health status. Policy-level action should address rising rates of HFI and long-term effects on these vulnerable populations.
Chapter 2 examines, often through the eyes and voices of aspirant learners, the varied paths that adults and children from a range of social classes took to learn stringed instruments, and the nature of the instruction they obtained. Through discussion of the violin trade, it addresses the affordability of instruments and accessories, arguing also that commerce powered the spread of violin culture geographically by creating a functional infrastructure. The chapter’s major concern is with the role of inexpensive group instruction in widening participation among the working classes through opportunities for learning in adult-education institutes in major cities, and in elementary schools, where the commercial “Maidstone” teaching program reached remarkable numbers of children. It highlights the persistence of Victorian values in these projects and reveals that group instruction subsequently became embedded nationally in many lower-profile string-teaching initiatives run by private teachers or as small academies. It further posits that the Maidstone movement had an impact on the subsequent development of classical-music audiences in Britain.

Chapter 50 covers the topic of child and adolescent mental health services. Through a case vignette with topical MCQs for consolidation of learning, readers are brought through the management of young patients with psychiatric disorders from first presentation to subsequent complications of the conditions and its treatment. Things covered include the general principles of prescribing in children and adolescent patients with psychiatric disorders, the use of antidepressants, the use of mood stabilisers, the use of antipsychotics, treatment of anxiety disorders.
Refugee youth are at high risk for trauma-related disorders – outcomes not only the result of pre-migration trauma, but consequences of diverse post-migration stressors. This study identified individual, parental, and environmental factors – some potentially modifiable – associated with trajectories of psychological risk and resilience in 291 Syrian and Iraqi refugee youth during resettlement in the U.S. Data was collected at arrival and at two follow-up visits up to 7 years post-arrival. Linear mixed modeling assessed predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression trajectories. Victimization trauma (i.e., assault) and lower maternal subjective social status predicted more severe PTSD (p = .046, f2 = .07; p < .001, f2 = .23) and anxiety (p = .008, f2 = .05; p = .002, f2 = .11) trajectories in youth. Paternal unemployment predicted less stable PTSD (p = .009, f2 = .13) and anxiety (p < .001, f2 = .10) trajectories. More severe depression trajectories were associated with female sex (p = .045, f2 = .06) and death threat traumas (p = .014, f2 = .07). Findings identified predictors of long-term risk and resilience for refugee youth, as well as potentially modifiable ecological risk factors. Victimization and death threat trauma exposure could be salient in identifying youth at high risk for trauma-related symptoms early in resettlement. Indicators of financial security were also associated with symptoms, suggesting environmental intervention targets.
This chapter offers a survey of published and unpublished autobiographies by writers born in the period 1790–1901 that tell the story of the ‘sailor in the family’. It identifies a set of common narrative motifs within these ‘maritime memoirs’ that cluster around the figure of the family sailor – including tales of travel, separation, dispersal, orphanhood, vanishings, reinventions, and improbable returns. Interweaving readings of autobiographies and family myths, alongside the broader literary forms of the Bildungsroman, adventure fiction, fairy tale and waif stories, the chapter shows how global maritime experience shaped the composition of ordinary families and the stories they told about themselves. The maritime relations of this chapter also reveal alternative family structures, beyond the nuclear family order, that were flexibly adapted and shaped to the various realities of mobility, risk and opportunity.
Arabic emphatic consonants are claimed to be late-acquired, likely due to their motoric complexity, involving both coronal and pharyngeal/uvular constrictions. Children’s production has largely been studied using impressionistic data, with limited acoustic analysis. This study acoustically examines the acquisition of emphatic consonants in Saudi-Hijazi Arabic-speaking children aged 3–6 years. Thirty-eight children performed a real-word repetition task, after which consonantal and vocalic cues to the plain–emphatic contrast were measured. Results show that children produce both types of acoustic cues, with an age-related increase in the acoustic contrast and an overall alignment with adult patterns. Larger acoustic contrasts were found in vowels preceding rather than following consonants in word-medial positions, with no evidence for a difference between word-initial and word-final positions. The plain–emphatic contrast was greater for stops than fricatives and larger for female than male children. These findings are discussed in relation to the development of coarticulated consonants.
The dietary inflammatory index (DII) has emerged as a promising tool associated with the development of cardiovascular risk factors. This systematic review and meta-analysis, developed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (the protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under number CRD42022323267), aimed to synthesise observational studies that evaluated the association between the DII and indicators of body adiposity and blood pressure in children and adolescents. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched, without time and language restrictions. The methodological quality of the studies and the certainty of the evidence were assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, respectively. The meta-analysis revealed that a higher DII (pro-inflammatory diet) was significantly associated with increased odds of body adiposity, as indicated by body mass index (BMI) (odds ratio [OR] = 1·62; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1·38–1·86), waist circumference (OR = 1·45; 95% CI 1·10–1·81) and the waist-to-height ratio (OR = 1·76; 95% CI 1·38–2·14) in adolescents, compared with those with a lower DII (anti-inflammatory diet). In addition, for every unit increase in the DII, there was a small but significant rise in mean BMI (β = 0·06 kg/m2). The children’s dietary inflammatory index (CDII) showed no association with cardiometabolic risk factors. There were no consistent associations between the DII or CDII and blood pressure. In conclusion, while a pro-inflammatory diet (based on the DII) is linked to body adiposity, additional longitudinal studies are needed to explore these associations, particularly regarding the CDII and blood pressure.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative validity of food and nutrient intakes estimated by a brief-type diet history questionnaire for Japanese children and adolescents (BDHQ15y) designed to assess habitual dietary intake during the previous month. A total of 432 boys and 412 girls aged 6–17 years from thirty-two prefectures in Japan completed the BDHQ15y and subsequently provided 8-day weighed dietary records (DR) on two non-consecutive days over four seasons for comparison. Among the intakes of forty-four nutrients and thirty-one food groups adjusted for energy intake using the density model, the BDHQ15y showed percentage differences in median intake of less than 10 % compared with the DR for nineteen nutrients in both sexes, as well as for eleven and seven food groups in boys and girls, respectively, indicating good agreement for key nutrients and food groups, including protein, fat, carbohydrate, dietary fibre, grains, vegetables, dairy products and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB). The median values (25th–75th percentiles) of Spearman’s correlation coefficients in boys and girls were 0·33 (0·28–0·38) and 0·28 (0·23–0·35) for nutrients, respectively, and 0·36 (0·29–0·42) and 0·29 (0·24–0·36) for food groups, respectively. Bland–Altman plots showed wide limits of agreement, with overestimation at higher intakes for most nutrients and food groups, except SSB. In conclusion, the BDHQ15y shows promise for large-scale dietary monitoring, particularly for estimating group-level intakes of key nutrients and food groups. However, its limited ability to rank individual intakes and the variability in individual-level assessments necessitate cautious interpretation and application.
This chapter explores safeguarding as a duty on tennis sport governing bodies (SGBs) and tennis academies in respect of their athletes, whether junior or senior. The chapter considers safeguarding as a duty of care, the violation of which gives rise to tort-based liability. It looks at the various instruments and codes adopted by tennis SGBs, as well as by national tennis federations, including also their monitoring processes. The chapter explores how these processes are enforced with a view to limiting exposure to risks present or future. The chapter also considers health and safety as part of the duty of safeguarding and goes on to point out legal consequences for failure to meet safeguarding obligations.
The authors examine the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 US censuses to identify demographic characteristics of children who resided in public and private institutions for minors, with special attention to patterns of racial segregation and exclusion. The article focuses on public and private institutions founded exclusively to serve children and youth and also on correctional institutions for children and adults. The authors found racial segregation in private institutions, underrepresentation of children of color in both private and public institutions, and overrepresentation of boys of color in correctional institutions for minors and adults. They also identified a historical pattern, with few exceptions, of excluding girls of color from all types of public and private institutions.
