A popular method to perform adversarial attacks on neural networks is the so-called fast gradient sign method and its iterative variant. In this paper, we interpret this method as an explicit Euler discretization of a differential inclusion, where we also show convergence of the discretization to the associated gradient flow. To do so, we consider the concept of $p$-curves of maximal slope in the case $p=\infty$. We prove existence of $\infty$-curves of maximum slope and derive an alternative characterization via differential inclusions. Furthermore, we also consider Wasserstein gradient flows for potential energies, where we show that curves in the Wasserstein space can be characterized by a representing measure on the space of curves in the underlying Banach space, which fulfil the differential inclusion. The application of our theory to the finite-dimensional setting is twofold: On the one hand, we show that a whole class of normalized gradient descent methods (in particular, signed gradient descent) converge, up to subsequences, to the flow when sending the step size to zero. On the other hand, in the distributional setting, we show that the inner optimization task of adversarial training objective can be characterized via $\infty$-curves of maximum slope on an appropriate optimal transport space.
Two novel algorithms, which incorporate inertial terms and relaxation effects, are introduced to tackle a monotone inclusion problem. The weak and strong convergence of the algorithms are obtained under certain conditions, and the R-linear convergence for the first algorithm is demonstrated if the set-valued operator involved is strongly monotone in real Hilbert spaces. The proposed algorithms are applied to signal recovery problems and demonstrate improved performance compared to existing algorithms in the literature.
The local analysis of convergence for Newton’s method has been extensively studied by numerous researchers under a plethora of sufficient conditions. However, the complexity of extending the convergence domain requires very general conditions such as the ones depending on the majorant principle in order to include as large classes of operators as possible. In the present article, such an analysis is developed under the weak majorant condition. The new results extend earlier ones using similar information. Finally, the numerical examples complement the theory.
In this paper, we consider an optimal control problem governed by Stokes equations with H1-norm state constraint. The control problem is approximated by spectral method, which provides very accurate approximation with a relatively small number of unknowns. Choosing appropriate basis functions leads to discrete system with sparse matrices. We first present the optimality conditions of the exact and the discrete optimal control systems, then derive both a priori and a posteriori error estimates. Finally, an illustrative numerical experiment indicates that the proposed method is competitive, and the estimator can indicate the errors very well.
In this paper, we investigate the Galerkin spectral approximation for elliptic control problems with integral control and state constraints. Firstly, an a posteriori error estimator is established,which can be acted as the equivalent indicatorwith explicit expression. Secondly, appropriate base functions of the discrete spacesmake it is probable to solve the discrete system. Numerical test indicates the reliability and efficiency of the estimator, and shows the proposed method is competitive for this class of control problems. These discussions can certainly be extended to two- and three-dimensional cases.
A new hybrid variational model for recovering blurred images in the presence of multiplicative noise is proposed. Inspired by previous work on multiplicative noise removal, an I-divergence technique is used to build a strictly convex model under a condition that ensures the uniqueness of the solution and the stability of the algorithm. A split-Bregman algorithm is adopted to solve the constrained minimisation problem in the new hybrid model efficiently. Numerical tests for simultaneous deblurring and denoising of the images subject to multiplicative noise are then reported. Comparison with other methods clearly demonstrates the good performance of our new approach.
In this paper, we consider variational approaches to handle the multiplicative noise removal and deblurring problem. Based on rather reasonable physical blurring-noisy assumptions, we derive a new variational model for this issue. After the study of the basic properties, we propose to approximate it by a convex relaxation model which is a balance between the previous non-convex model and a convex model. The relaxed model is solved by an alternating minimization approach. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.
It is well known that nonlinear integro-differential equations play vital role in modeling of many physical processes, such as nano-hydrodynamics, drop wise condensation, oceanography, earthquake and wind ripple in desert. Inspired and motivated by these facts, we use the variation of parameters method for solving system of nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equations. The proposed technique is applied without any discretization, perturbation, transformation, restrictive assumptions and is free from Adomian’s polynomials. Several examples are given to verify the reliability and efficiency of the proposed technique.
