The editors of Transactions are retracting the above article as, following publication, it was brought to the editors’ attention that passages of the article bore close similarities to Brian K. Feltman, ‘Tolerance as a Crime? The British Treatment of German Prisoners of War on the Western Front, 1914–1918ʹ, War in History 17, no. 4 (2010): 435–58.

Following a detailed review, the editors, together with three independent and experienced journal editors, identified passages of the article which followed this source too closely in argument, content and style, without sufficient acknowledgement/reference.

At the time of its submission to Transactions, the article was submitted to another journal, contrary to the declaration made by the author at the time of submission.

The author, Alex J. Kay, strongly disagrees with this decision.
