Alkaloid Response to Defoliation of Velvet Lupine (Lupinus leucophyllus)

Abstract

Velvet lupine planst were defoliated (50% of upper foliage) in 1983 and 1984 to determine total alkaloid concentration (TAC), percent crude protein (CP), and fiber in regrowth foliage. TAC in regrowth leaves was 15% lower than in the original leaves removed at the beginning of the study. Percent CP of regrowth leaves was 22% lower than in original defoliated leaves. Alkaloids and CP did not increase in response to defoliation stress from simulated herbivory as plant defense theories predicted.
