The Bilbao School Health Service was created at the beginning of thecentury with the aim of preventing transmittable diseases amongchildren as well as improving nutrition. At that time such serviceswere established in many other countries. Since then, according toevolving societal changes and emerging needs, the Service hasreoriented its scope and structure towards the Health Promotionscheme.

Current tasks include health screening examinations and hygienesurveillance as well as preventive and health educationprogrammes.
