Librarian of Congress James H. Billington and UNESCO AssistantDirector for Communication and Information Abdul Waheed Khanrecently signed an agreement at UNESCO headquarters in Parispledging cooperative efforts to build a World Digital Library website. The World Digital Library will digitize unique and rarematerials from libraries around the world, including manuscripts,maps, books, musical scores, sound recordings, films, prints, andphotographs, and make them available for free on the Internet. Theobjectives of the World Digital Library include promotinginternational and intercultural understanding; increasing thequantity and diversity of cultural materials on the Internet; andcontributing to education and scholarship.
