On many campuses, the sight of a student in a military uniform iscommon. On other campuses, the military is a distant institutionwith few visible affiliations. Why are some students in uniform,what are they doing, what are the costs and benefits to theindividual, and what are the implications for the nation? Thisarticle will discuss these questions, along with a brief history ofthe Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program and itsrelationship to the often-discussed civil-military gap.
