Martha Derthick's Policymaking for Social Securityis a great work of political analysis—one of the best studies of thepolitics of public policy ever produced. Written a quarter-centuryago, the argument remains fresh and compelling today—fresher, infact, than most policy work produced more recently. Indeed, what isstriking in revisiting this wonderful book is how Derthickbeautifully explores some themes that are only now reassertingthemselves in the discipline and commanding the attention ofpolitical scientists.
