Novel Uses of Boron Phosphide Films

Abstract

Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition (PACVD) deposited films of Boron Phosphide (BP) are known to be very effective in protecting the 8-11.5μm band IR substrate materials germaniurn and zinc sulphide from solid and liquid particle erosion encountered in high speed flight. This paper describes the results obtained by protecting the 3-5μm band substrate material silicon and the 8-11.5μm band substrate material zinc selenide. In addition, results are presented which show that germanium can be very effectively protected from the corrosive effects of salt fog.
