Extract

Due to the limited amount of structural information that can be obtained using traditional techniques of solid state physics (e.g., x-ray or neutron diffraction), the structure of oxide glasses has remained a controversial topic since the introduction of the “random network theory” in 1932. While there are several experimental methods that can provide detailed information about the local structural properties of glasses (e.g., NMR, EXAFS, optical absorption, Mössbauer absorption, and EPR spectroscopy), very little information is available regarding the distribution of intermediate size (∼10–500 Å) structural units.
