Abstract

The development of novel, Radical Purex, reprocessing technologies, leadingto fission product waste streams with high levels of inert constituents, maymean that vitrification is no longer the optimum solution for theimmobilisation of highly active wastes at the back end of the nuclear fuelcycle. A ceramic phase assemblage is described which uses the inertconstituents of the waste stream as a functional component of the wasteform, permitting high waste loadings to be achieved and thus enabling wasteminimisation considerations to be satisfied. The initial development of thisphase assemblage is presented.
