Densification Behavior of Al2O3 Powders Containing ZrO2 Inclusions

Abstract

Densification experiments using ZrO2 single-crystal particles in an Al2O3 powder matrix were performed to examine the microstructural changes produced by constrained densification. Observations showed the formation of large, lowdensity regions within a denser material network. Enlargement of pores by desintering of necks between grains was observed during grain coarsening within these low-density regions. This pore opening behavior was also investigated in a model experiment.
