Later Gupta History: Inscriptions, Coinsand Historical Ideology

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  26 July 2005

Abstract

This article argues for a radical revision of laterGupta chronology based on a review of the primaryevidence. The paucity of dated material has meantthat historical reconstructions of the period havebeen based on late-Victorian assumptions about thenature of society and kingship. Removing thisideological framework allows not only for a revisionof chronology — a traditional historical concern —but for a new understanding of Gupta kingship andthe constitution of state.
