Call for Managing Editor
21 Jul 2025 to 25 Jul 2025

Cambridge University Press is looking to appoint a part-time freelance managing editor to assist the editorial team of the Journal of Latin American Studies. This individual will work with an engaged and busy editorial team, playing a central role in the publication of one of the world’s leading area studies journals.

The managing editor will serve as the primary point of contact and guidance for authors and reviewers and will support the Editors in managing the submission and review of articles. In addition, the role helps to develop ideas for JLAS-sponsored events at the University College London Institute of the Americas and coordinates with the University on these events.

The ideal candidate will have a university degree in Latin American Studies or a closely related discipline with working proficiency in the languages of the region. Familiarity with online peer review systems such as ScholarOne or experience working in some capacity with a scholarly publication would be an advantage. Interested applicants should send a resume/CV and brief cover letter detailing their qualifications and interest in the position at JLAS.

Priority will be given to applications received by 25 July 2025.

The Managing Editor’s responsibilities will include:

  • Administrative processing of articles and reviews; distributing new submissions to the editors; managing ongoing correspondence among the editors, authors and reviewers; and tracking submissions and resubmissions.
  • Representing the first point of contact at the JLAS office; responding to enquiries; logging submissions and maintaining the accuracy of database information and instructions for contributors.
  • Supporting the Book Review Editor in managing the solicitation of reviews.
  • Assisting in the management of the journal’s academic Editorial Board, including helping to organise and keeping minutes for the annual board meeting.
  • Coordinating with UCL Institute of the Americas staff for up to up to 5 one-day events per year.

It is anticipated that such duties will require the equivalent of fifteen hours per week, although there will be some predictable ebb and flow in the distribution of these hours according to the publication cycle. The managing editor will work remotely on a freelance basis and will be paid monthly at a rate of £20/hr up to a maximum of 60 hours per month. Applicants must be residents of the United Kingdom.

Please direct applications and any questions to Chris McKeen, Associate Publisher, Cambridge University Press at chris.mckeen@cambridge-org.demo.remotlog.com, using “JLAS Call for Managing Editor” as your email subject line.
