Martin Sicker's book is an account of the emergence of Jewish nationalism centered onPalestine during the century prior to the establishment of the British Mandate. It is a tertiarysource, written mostly on the basis of published secondary sources. Hence, it offers no newmaterial or interpretations for specialists to consider. The text is clean, unencumbered by a surfeitof notes, and it is easy to grasp. The major audience, in addition to students, would appear to bepolicy-makers and public-affairs professionals who need a concisely presented and easilydigestible historical background study.
