Our efforts in the treatment of drug addiction have been a series of failures. The presence of innumerable programs is proof positive that none of them are particularly successful. First, let's take a brief look at the various programs.

In 1939 the Federal Government established hospitals in Lexington and fort Worth. The patients who went there voluntarily stayed for five and a half months, at an expense of up to $1,000 a month. The relapse rate is not known because of the difficulty in following these patients. It is not an exaggeration to estimate it at 90 % or 95 %.
