Remembering Lady Hazel Fox

Lady Hazel Fox CMG KC became General Editor of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly in 1982 when she became Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law. Although she stepped down as Director in 1989, she remained General Editor of the ICLQ until 1998. She continued to be an active member of the Editorial Board until 2004, marking over two decades of service to the ICLQ, though her influence continued until 2015 through her publications in the Journal.

During her time as General Editor she oversaw the progressive expansion of the ICLQ’s coverage, including recent developments in British practice in international law from 1987, a regular section on European Community Law in 1989, and notes on cases in the International Court of Justice from 1992.

To celebrate her contribution to the ICLQ and to international law more generally, we have gathered the articles she published in the ICLQ into a collection.

She also published 34 book reviews in the ICLQ, particularly of works on State immunity, treaties, dispute settlement and arbitration, the Antarctic, and international courts and tribunals including the United Nations Compensation Commission. Some examples of reviews of key works are included below.
