This special issue, published in 2023 upon the centenary of the Irish Civil War, offers a new cultural history of the Irish Revolution focusing on three interlocking strands: space, emotion and memory. The contributions explore rural and transnational spaces of revolution, and how the revolutionary and post-revolutionary periods stirred up emotions like love, nostalgia, pain, grief, horror and boredom. They also address the memory of the revolution within families and communities, with attention to silences, ellipses, and omissions. Collectively, the authors invite further research on the cultural history and lived experience of other (post)-revolutionary moments across contemporary Europe.
