Radiocarbon age measurements from the recent International Collaborative Study (ICS) (Scott et al. 1988), have confirmed significant discrepancies among dating laboratories, noted by the earlier ISG study of 1982. A full report will appear in a special issue ofRadiocarbon (volume 32, 1990). This paper gives an immediate synopsis of the ISG and ICS conclusions, their implications and the resultant proposals by the international 14C dating community for a formal scheme of quality assurance to address analytical problems – all matters the archaeological community needs to be aware of.
