Jim Coulton (1940-2020) made an outstanding contribution to the field of Greek archaeology through his unparalleled understanding of the way in which ancient Greek buildings were put together, moving the field away from aesthetics to problems of structure and design, in the fieldwork he carried out in several locations in Greece and Turkey, and in his inspired teaching of generations of students.
Jim started his career at the British School at Athens where he began to develop his perceptive and subtle appreciation of Greek architecture and his peerless drafting skills, both of which are well reflected in this collection of nine articles published in the BSA's Annual. His larger vision is embodied in his two major books on architecture The Architectural Development of the Greek Stoa (1976) and the much reprinted Greek Architects at Work: Problems of Structure and Design (1977) and monographs covering his fieldwork.
