Can presidency research do more than probe idiosyncraticcases? Our knowledge of the American presidency and thestatus of presidency studies in political science both hang onthe answer to that question. Indeed, the current researchagenda in this field exhibits a confidence that its findings areamenable to generalization and deserve the discipline's ap-probation.
