Abstract

Atlatl engaging spurs are recorded from most regions of California and are placed provisionally into three types. Type I, “Snake head,” is composed primarily of specimens made of stone and has Central California Early horizon, Martis complex, and Early-Transitional Lovelock affinities. Type II, “Acorn,” is composed primarily of bone or antler specimens with Central California Middle horizon affinities. Type III may be a variant of Type I and has, as yet, undefined cultural and temporal affinities.
