This study provides the theoretical foundation for awell-established, but.heretofore empirical, criterion for incipient separation in moderatelyhypersonic shock/boundary layer interactions. It isbased on an examination of the leading high Reynoldsnumber approximation to triple deck theory, combinedwith its reformulation in terms of the referencetemperature concept. The analysis further providesextensions giving the effects of both low supersonicMach numbers and non-adiabatic wall temperatures onincipient separation.
