Characterisation of sandpaper roughnessunder a turbulent incompressible boundarylayer

Abstract

The work reported here extends the work of Nikuradse onthe categorisation of surface roughness. Nikuradse’swork considered pipe flow, whilst in this paperboundary layer flow is investigated. Important andfundamental differences between these two types offlow are shown. An experiment upon turbulentboundary layers over sandpaper-type roughnessesenabled a fluid-mechanic categorisation of thesesurfaces to be obtained for this flow. This iscompared with some shape and size categorisations ofthe roughnesses from detailed measurements.
