We derive Laplace transform identities for the volume content of random stopping sets based on Poisson point processes. Our results are based on anticipating Girsanov identities for Poisson point processes under a cyclic vanishing condition for a finite difference gradient. This approach does not require classical assumptions based on set-indexed martingales and the (partial) ordering of index sets. The examples treated focus on stopping sets in finite volume, and include the random missed volume of Poisson convex hulls.

We provide a characterization of realisable set covariograms, bringing a rigorous yet abstract solution to the S 2 problem in materials science. Our method is based on the covariogram functional for random measurable sets (RAMS) and on a result about the representation of positive operators on a noncompact space. RAMS are an alternative to the classical random closed sets in stochastic geometry and geostatistics, and they provide a weaker framework that allows the manipulation of more irregular functionals, such as the perimeter. We therefore use the illustration provided by the S 2 problem to advocate the use of RAMS for solving theoretical problems of a geometric nature. Along the way, we extend the theory of random measurable sets, and in particular the local approximation of the perimeter by local covariograms.

Consider a real-valued discrete-time stationary and ergodic stochastic process, called the noise process. For each dimension n, we can choose a stationary point process in ℝn and a translation invariant tessellation of ℝn . Each point is randomly displaced, with a displacement vector being a section of length n of the noise process, independent from point to point. The aim is to find a point process and a tessellation that minimizes the probability of decoding error, defined as the probability that the displaced version of the typical point does not belong to the cell of this point. We consider the Shannon regime, in which the dimension n tends to ∞, while the logarithm of the intensity of the point processes, normalized by dimension, tends to a constant. We first show that this problem exhibits a sharp threshold: if the sum of the asymptotic normalized logarithmic intensity and of the differential entropy rate of the noise process is positive, then the probability of error tends to 1 with n for all point processes and all tessellations. If it is negative then there exist point processes and tessellations for which this probability tends to 0. The error exponent function, which denotes how quickly the probability of error goes to 0 in n, is then derived using large deviations theory. If the entropy spectrum of the noise satisfies a large deviations principle, then, below the threshold, the error probability goes exponentially fast to 0 with an exponent that is given in closed form in terms of the rate function of the noise entropy spectrum. This is obtained for two classes of point processes: the Poisson process and a Matérn hard-core point process. New lower bounds on error exponents are derived from this for Shannon's additive noise channel in the high signal-to-noise ratio limit that hold for all stationary and ergodic noises with the above properties and that match the best known bounds in the white Gaussian noise case.

Gaussian particles provide a flexible framework for modelling and simulating three-dimensional star-shaped random sets. In our framework, the radial function of the particle arises from a kernel smoothing, and is associated with an isotropic random field on the sphere. If the kernel is a von Mises-Fisher density, or uniform on a spherical cap, the correlation function of the associated random field admits a closed form expression. The Hausdorff dimension of the surface of the Gaussian particle reflects the decay of the correlation function at the origin, as quantified by the fractal index. Under power kernels we obtain particles with boundaries of any Hausdorff dimension between 2 and 3.

For a class of cell division processes in the Euclidean space ℝd , spatial consistency is investigated. This addresses the problem whether the distribution of the generated structures, restricted to a bounded set V, depends on the choice of a larger region W ⊃ V where the construction of the cell division process is performed. This can also be understood as the problem of boundary effects in the cell division procedure. It is known that the STIT tessellations are spatially consistent. In the present paper it is shown that, within a reasonable wide class of cell division processes, the STIT tessellations are the only ones that are consistent.

We consider Euclidean first passage percolation on a large family of connected random geometric graphs in the d-dimensional Euclidean space encompassing various well-known models from stochastic geometry. In particular, we establish a strong linear growth property for shortest-path lengths on random geometric graphs which are generated by point processes. We consider the event that the growth of shortest-path lengths between two (end) points of the path does not admit a linear upper bound. Our linear growth property implies that the probability of this event tends to zero sub-exponentially fast if the direct (Euclidean) distance between the endpoints tends to infinity. Besides, for a wide class of stationary and isotropic random geometric graphs, our linear growth property implies a shape theorem for the Euclidean first passage model defined by such random geometric graphs. Finally, this shape theorem can be used to investigate a problem which is considered in structural analysis of fixed-access telecommunication networks, where we determine the limiting distribution of the length of the longest branch in the shortest-path tree extracted from a typical segment system if the intensity of network stations converges to 0.

This paper concerns the asymptotic behavior of a random variable W λ resulting from the summation of the functionals of a Gibbsian spatial point process over windows Q λ ↑ ℝ d . We establish conditions ensuring that W λ has volume order fluctuations, i.e. they coincide with the fluctuations of functionals of Poisson spatial point processes. We combine this result with Stein's method to deduce rates of a normal approximation for W λ as λ → ∞. Our general results establish variance asymptotics and central limit theorems for statistics of random geometric and related Euclidean graphs on Gibbsian input. We also establish a similar limit theory for claim sizes of insurance models with Gibbsian input, the number of maximal points of a Gibbsian sample, and the size of spatial birth-growth models with Gibbsian input.

Let X 1, X 2, …, X n be independent and uniformly distributed random variables in the unit square [0, 1]2, and let L(X 1, …, X n ) be the length of the shortest traveling salesman path through these points. In 1959, Beardwood, Halton and Hammersley proved the existence of a universal constant β such that limn→∞ n−1/2 L(X 1, …, X n ) = β almost surely. The best bounds for β are still those originally established by Beardwood, Halton and Hammersley, namely 0.625 ≤ β ≤ 0.922. We slightly improve both upper and lower bounds.

The class of restless bandits as proposed by Whittle (1988) have long been known to be intractable. This paper presents an optimality result which extends that of Weber and Weiss (1990) for restless bandits to a more general setting in which individual bandits have multiple levels of activation but are subject to an overall resource constraint. The contribution is motivated by the recent works of Glazebrook et al. (2011a), (2011b) who discussed the performance of index heuristics for resource allocation in such systems. Hitherto, index heuristics have been shown, under a condition of full indexability, to be optimal for a natural Lagrangian relaxation of such problems in which a resource is purchased rather than constrained. We find that under key assumptions about the nature of solutions to a deterministic differential equation that the index heuristics above are asymptotically optimal in a sense described by Whittle. We then demonstrate that these assumptions always hold for three-state bandits.

In this paper we study Nash equilibrium payoffs for nonzero-sum stochastic differential games with two reflecting barriers. We obtain an existence and a characterization of Nash equilibrium payoffs for nonzero-sum stochastic differential games with nonlinear cost functionals defined by doubly controlled reflected backward stochastic differential equations with two reflecting barriers.

We consider a threshold epidemic model on a clustered random graph model obtained from local transformations in an alternating branching process that approximates a bipartite graph. In other words, our epidemic model is such that an individual becomes infected as soon as the proportion of his/her infected neighbors exceeds the threshold q of the epidemic. In our random graph model, each individual can belong to several communities. The distributions for the community sizes and the number of communities an individual belongs to are arbitrary. We consider the case where the epidemic starts from a single individual, and we prove a phase transition (when the parameter q of the model varies) for the appearance of a cascade, i.e. when the epidemic can be propagated to an infinite part of the population. More precisely, we show that our epidemic is entirely described by a multi-type (and alternating) branching process, and then we apply Sevastyanov's theorem about the phase transition of multi-type Galton-Watson branching processes. In addition, we compute the entries of the mean progeny matrix corresponding to the epidemic. The phase transition for the contagion is given in terms of the largest eigenvalue of this matrix.

‘Small worlds’ are large systems in which any given node has only a few connections to other points, but possessing the property that all pairs of points are connected by a short path, typically logarithmic in the number of nodes. The use of random walks for sampling a uniform element from a large state space is by now a classical technique; to prove that such a technique works for a given network, a bound on the mixing time is required. However, little detailed information is known about the behaviour of random walks on small-world networks, though many predictions can be found in the physics literature. The principal contribution of this paper is to show that for a famous small-world random graph model known as the Newman-Watts small-world model, the mixing time is of order log2 n. This confirms a prediction of Richard Durrett [5, page 22], who proved a lower bound of order log2 n and an upper bound of order log3 n.

This paper is concerned with the solution of the optimal stopping problem associated to the value of American options driven by continuous-time Markov chains. The value-function of an American option in this setting is characterised as the unique solution (in a distributional sense) of a system of variational inequalities. Furthermore, with continuous and smooth fit principles not applicable in this discrete state-space setting, a novel explicit characterisation is provided of the optimal stopping boundary in terms of the generator of the underlying Markov chain. Subsequently, an algorithm is presented for the valuation of American options under Markov chain models. By application to a suitably chosen sequence of Markov chains, the algorithm provides an approximate valuation of an American option under a class of Markov models that includes diffusion models, exponential Lévy models, and stochastic differential equations driven by Lévy processes. Numerical experiments for a range of different models suggest that the approximation algorithm is flexible and accurate. A proof of convergence is also provided.

This paper is concerned with the bottom-up hierarchical system and public debate model proposed by Galam (2008), as well as a spatial version of the public debate model. In all three models, there is a population of individuals who are characterized by one of two competing opinions, say opinion −1 and opinion +1. This population is further divided into groups of common size s. In the bottom-up hierarchical system, each group elects a representative candidate, whereas in the other two models, all the members of each group discuss at random times until they reach a consensus. At each election/discussion, the winning opinion is chosen according to Galam's majority rule: the opinion with the majority of representatives wins when there is a strict majority, while one opinion, say opinion −1, is chosen by default in the case of a tie. For the public debate models we also consider the following natural updating rule that we call proportional rule: the winning opinion is chosen at random with a probability equal to the fraction of its supporters in the group. The three models differ in term of their population structure: in the bottom-up hierarchical system, individuals are located on a finite regular tree, in the nonspatial public debate model, they are located on a complete graph, and in the spatial public debate model, they are located on the d-dimensional regular lattice. For the bottom-up hierarchical system and nonspatial public debate model, Galam studied the probability that a given opinion wins under the majority rule and, assuming that individuals' opinions are initially independent, making the initial number of supporters of a given opinion a binomial random variable. The first objective of this paper is to revisit Galam's result, assuming that the initial number of individuals in favor of a given opinion is a fixed deterministic number. Our analysis reveals phase transitions that are sharper under our assumption than under Galam's assumption, particularly with small population size. The second objective is to determine whether both opinions can coexist at equilibrium for the spatial public debate model under the proportional rule, which depends on the spatial dimension.

We study the asymptotics of a Markovian system of N ≥ 3 particles in [0, 1]d in which, at each step in discrete time, the particle farthest from the current centre of mass is removed and replaced by an independent U[0, 1]d random particle. We show that the limiting configuration contains N − 1 coincident particles at a random location ξN ∈ [0, 1]d . A key tool in the analysis is a Lyapunov function based on the squared radius of gyration (sum of squared distances) of the points. For d = 1, we give additional results on the distribution of the limit ξN , showing, among other things, that it gives positive probability to any nonempty interval subset of [0, 1], and giving a reasonably explicit description in the smallest nontrivial case, N = 3.

We study cyclic polling models with exhaustive service at each queue under a variety of non-FCFS (first-come-first-served) local service orders, namely last-come-first-served with and without preemption, random-order-of-service, processor sharing, the multi-class priority scheduling with and without preemption, shortest-job-first, and the shortest remaining processing time policy. For each of these policies, we first express the waiting-time distributions in terms of intervisit-time distributions. Next, we use these expressions to derive the asymptotic waiting-time distributions under heavy-traffic assumptions, i.e. when the system tends to saturate. The results show that in all cases the asymptotic waiting-time distribution at queue i is fully characterized and of the form Γ Θi , with Γ and Θi independent, and where Γ is gamma distributed with known parameters (and the same for all scheduling policies). We derive the distribution of the random variable Θi which explicitly expresses the impact of the local service order on the asymptotic waiting-time distribution. The results provide new fundamental insight into the impact of the local scheduling policy on the performance of a general class of polling models. The asymptotic results suggest simple closed-form approximations for the complete waiting-time distributions for stable systems with arbitrary load values.

The goal of this paper is to identify exponential convergence rates and to find computable bounds for them for Markov processes representing unreliable Jackson networks. First, we use the bounds of Lawler and Sokal (1988) in order to show that, for unreliable Jackson networks, the spectral gap is strictly positive if and only if the spectral gaps for the corresponding coordinate birth and death processes are positive. Next, utilizing some results on birth and death processes, we find bounds on the spectral gap for network processes in terms of the hazard and equilibrium functions of the one-dimensional marginal distributions of the stationary distribution of the network. These distributions must be in this case strongly light-tailed, in the sense that their discrete hazard functions have to be separated from 0. We relate these hazard functions with the corresponding networks' service rate functions using the equilibrium rates of the stationary one-dimensional marginal distributions. We compare the obtained bounds on the spectral gap with some other known bounds.

We develop diffusion approximations for parallel-queueing systems with the randomized longest-queue-first scheduling (LQF) algorithm by establishing new mean-field limit theorems as the number of buffers n → ∞. We achieve this by allowing the number of sampled buffers d = d(n) to depend on the number of buffers n, which yields an asymptotic 'decoupling' of the queue length processes. We show through simulation experiments that the resulting approximation is accurate even for moderate values of n and d(n). To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first derivation of diffusion approximations for a queueing system in the large-buffer mean-field regime. Another noteworthy feature of our scaling idea is that the randomized LQF algorithm emulates the LQF algorithm, yet is computationally more attractive. The analysis of the system performance as a function of d(n) is facilitated by the multi-scale nature in our limit theorems: the various processes we study have different space scalings. This allows us to show the trade-off between performance and complexity of the randomized LQF scheduling algorithm.

In this paper we consider the beta(2 − α, α)-coalescents with 1 < α < 2 and study the moments of external branches, in particular, the total external branch length of an initial sample of n individuals. For this class of coalescents, it has been proved that n α-1 T (n) →DT, where T (n) is the length of an external branch chosen at random and T is a known nonnegative random variable. In this paper we study the augmented truncation of discrete-time block-monotone Markov chains under geometric drift conditions. We first present a bound for the total variation distance between the stationary distributions of an original Markov chain and its augmented truncation. We also obtain such error bounds for more general cases, where an original Markov chain itself is not necessarily block monotone but is blockwise dominated by a block-monotone Markov chain. Finally, we discuss the application of our results to GI/G/1-type Markov chains.
