Abstract

Background: Eating disorders are defined by abnormal eating behaviors that adversely affect both physical and mental health. They impact approximately 15% of the global population, with various risk factors influencing their prevalence, such as social media influence, body dissatisfaction, and the quest for physical appearance perfectionism. Objectives: This research paper aims to assess the prevalence of eating disorders and investigate the associated risk fac-tors among youth in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: The study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design, including a sample of 744 participants aged 15 to 24. The analysis included frequencies, percentages, and chi-square tests. Results: The findings indicated that the prevalence of eating disorders among youth in the Eastern Province was approximately 65.3%. Additionally, a significant correlation was identified between social media influence and the pursuit of physical appearance perfectionism in the development of eating disorders. Conclusion: These results underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions to raise awareness, promote body satisfaction, and reduce the prevalence of eating disorders among youth.
